What does a graph Ugly?

Thursday, November 11, 2010

I know your cards are not in a beauty contest so what can I do with my bad input? The beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Therefore, a picture that clearly does not turn its place is bad.

There are three things that make a bad graph:

Lack of concentration
Wrong type of graph
Bad color

There are two ways a graph may lack focus; independent variables and variables outside the scope of control.

A graph showing the independent variables, the focus is missing. Start the AccountsA payment of money without inventory and warehouse makes sense. It 's like the game from Sesame Street. One of these things is not like others. Share price not directly related to inventory or accounts payable.

If the variables are shown in a diagram, not all under the control of the viewer, there is a lack of concentration. If you can not change a variable, because you see?

Wrong type of graph

It 'amazing how often people choose the wrong type of graph. There is usually a tool or vendor hype chart type. The most recent example is the track gauge. The business intelligence included in its teaching tools. The message is "You need to simplify the communication as a dashboard.

The problem with this logic is that the dashboard information tools are used once and forget. If you look at the speedometer and see you're doing 75 in a 45 zone, slow down. In a business, but you need to know if 75is a good or a bad number. For this decision, you need to see what was the story. Was increasing or decreasing?

The other reason for choosing the wrong type of chart is the wrong choice between the types of time series and now feel.

A point in time diagram shows the values of a number of variables or organizations in a single point in time. Types of graph that shows a single point in time can be cake, stacked bar graph, and bar charts. The pie chart is thesingle common time chart type. A pie chart shows the relationship between the segments for a single date. If it is abused, you have different schemas of the same variables for different periods. Changes in the pie charts are difficult to compare, which makes them the wrong choice.

Standings time series show one or more variables in an interval of time. The most common types of diagrams are used to display time series are line, bar, and surface (also referred to as range) charts. ThisChart types are the wrong choice by the 3-dimensional (or 3D) graphics software features. In my opinion the 3D capabilities should never be used. It is hidden behind other figures or figures makes it difficult or impossible to see the door, bar lines or areas.

Bad color

The color should be a tool to help people read and make sense of your charts. The problem with the color, as people choose to use colors. The two main problems arecombination of colors and color contrast.

Colors do not match are those that would be difficult to read or watch the colors. lead to high or too low contrast for both problems. The bright colors of different shades are difficult to read when they are presented side by side. Red and green are great for Christmas, but bad if you try to make a table profit. Other colors that are similar, especially bad decisions if you have a bar chart. Examples are yellow and green, red and orange, andpurple and blue.

Choose colors for each chart separately is confusing. With a legend does not solve the problem. You should choose colors with a chart group, not individually for each card. Use colors in a consistent way for organizations across graphs.

Your ranking is simply ugly. But it is equally easy to graphics, easy to read and useful to the public must be given. Take your time and your diagrams do better.
